I Hate Spring Break

13:37 Mar 26 2013
Times Read: 528

While some of you are off in sunny exciting and beachy places... I'm stuck with 120+ animals to take care of.

FUCK SPRING BREAK!

We are severely understaffed (you can thank my dip shit boss who thinks hiring people is too "tiring") and so I'm working solid all week.

Its only day 2? 3? hell I don't even know... and I'm already exhausted.

My feet hurt, my back hurts, my head hurts, even my hair hurts.

And now to sleep for 5 hours before I have to be back at work for my closing through overnight shift...

Death would be a nice reprieve right now...

Sump Pump failures are the WORST!

00:35 Mar 15 2013
Times Read: 535

This past Monday both of our sump pumps fritzed out and failed on us :( Too much rain melting the 3 feet of snow and they just couldn't keep up.

Now my basement is a DISASTER!

We're going to have to toss a LOT of stuff and shell out major dough to replace, fix, and clean the rest. And that's not even including the floor...

Which is now warped like the house was built on speed bumps.

Thankfully most of the important stuff was either high enough that it wasn't affected or was moved in time before real damage set in....

But we weren't so lucky in the book department :(

We have A LOT of books down there... Old books, Collectors books, First edition books....

I'm heartbroken right now. We have first editions of Winnie the Pooh, a Mother Goose book from the 1920's, First editions of HP (yes I know these aren't nearly as hard to find... but still), Some really collectible books on WWII, and so many more :(

I've got most of them layed out to dry but I don't think many of them will make it...

If anyone has any tips to dry out flooded books please let me know... I really want to save as many of these as I can :(

Yowie Yowie Yowie mine back iz broked :(

Ok not literally but it IS damaged... a fair amount.

Today I saw an Orthopedic surgeon to discuss the MRI and Xrays I had done last month, so I could HOPEFULLY figure out WTF is going wrong and maybe come up with a plan to fix it.

After my original MRI, I was told I had a "bulged disc in the lower spine causing sciatica"

Now having a new MRI (and competent doctors) we finally know exactly how bad it is.

I have not one but two bulged discs in my back. One between the L3 and L4 and one between the L5 and the S1 (complicated speak I know).

Basically the squishy disc between your spine vertebrae has ruptured and is pushing on my spinal cord and nerves. Both causing pain, numbness, tingling, and (something I wasn't aware of) weakness in my left side.

The pain has been constant since 2006 so that wasn't anything knew... and I have had tingling and numbness fairly consistent since 2006 so that wasn't even so surprising... but the weakness?

I knew I was more wobbly if I had to stand on just my left leg... but let's be honest, WHO stands just on one leg regularly? I'm not a flamingo...

We did a whole bunch of resistance and strength tests and well what do you know... my left leg IS weak. Rather glaringly so...

Turns out the way the nerve is being pinched it has caused some (possibly irreparable) weakness on the left side. Meaning no matter what treatment I pursue... I might always have this "bum-ish" leg.

Speaking of treatment...

Based on the MRI, the symptoms (pain, numbness, etc), and (new to me) weakness... There is a 99% chance I'll need to have back surgery.

Fucking. Fantastic.

There are other treatments we could try... Epidurals are common, Traction (Basically they put you in a stretching machine and pull you apart until your spine realigns), physical therapy, blah blah blah...

Though he didn't think those were very viable options at this point (mostly because of the weakness and the fact that it WILL get progressively worse over time) and said that in his opinion surgery was going to be it.

He did recommend (and referred) me to a spine specialist to go over the MRIs and discuss a treatment course. This was a bit more advanced than either of us anticipated, and since surgery is looking like the best option we want to have all bases covered.

I'm totally ok with that... though I will fight like HELL to at least TRY other options first... Surgery is no joke, especially back surgery, so I'd like to leave that for last if I can help it.

Below is one (of the many) pics of my spine that show the disc bulges.

Red dots = bulged discs

Green dots = normal discs
